Dry
Needling

Performed by our licensed Doctors of Physical Therapy, trigger point dry needling releases knotted muscle tissue, reduces pain, and restores normal movement — faster than manual therapy alone.

What Is Dry Needling?

Not acupuncture.
A different science entirely.

Dry needling uses thin, sterile monofilament needles — the same type used in acupuncture — but the approach, training, and clinical rationale are completely different. Dry needling is grounded in Western anatomical and neurophysiological science. It targets myofascial trigger points: hypersensitive knots within muscle that cause local pain and refer pain to other areas.

When the needle contacts a trigger point, it causes a brief involuntary twitch response — the muscle fires and then relaxes. This mechanical disruption, combined with the neurological response it triggers, reduces muscle tension, restores blood flow to the area, and interrupts the pain-spasm-pain cycle that perpetuates many chronic pain conditions.

At Cowboy Healthcare, dry needling is always performed by licensed DPTs with advanced certification in trigger point needling — never delegated to unlicensed assistants. It is typically used as one component of a comprehensive PT session, combined with manual therapy and therapeutic exercise.

Conditions It Treats

Where dry needling
works best

Neck Pain & Cervicogenic Headaches

Upper trapezius, levator scapulae, and suboccipital trigger points are among the most common sources of chronic neck pain and headaches. Dry needling provides rapid relief that stretching and massage often can't reach.

Low Back & Gluteal Pain

Paraspinal, quadratus lumborum, and piriformis trigger points contribute to chronic low back pain and pseudo-sciatica. Needling combined with core stabilisation produces lasting results.

Shoulder & Rotator Cuff

Trigger points in the rotator cuff muscles and periscapular stabilisers cause restricted shoulder mobility and persistent pain. Needling improves range of motion rapidly.

Tennis & Golfer's Elbow

Lateral and medial epicondylalgia respond well to dry needling combined with eccentric loading programs. We address both the trigger points and the tendon loading issue.

Plantar Fasciitis & Achilles

Gastrocnemius, soleus, and intrinsic foot muscle trigger points perpetuate plantar heel pain. Dry needling interrupts the cycle and allows therapeutic loading to begin.

Hip Flexor & IT Band Tightness

Chronically overactive hip flexors and tensor fascia latae respond rapidly to dry needling, allowing the corrective movement work to take hold more effectively.

Common Questions

What patients
always ask

Does dry needling hurt?

You may feel a brief, dull ache or muscle twitch when the needle contacts a trigger point. Most patients describe it as a fleeting "cramping" sensation that resolves within seconds. The needles themselves are extremely thin and cause much less discomfort than a typical injection.

How is it different from acupuncture?

Acupuncture is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine and targets meridians and energy flow. Dry needling is rooted in anatomical and neurophysiological science and specifically targets myofascial trigger points. The needle is the same; the rationale, training, and technique are entirely different.

How soon will I feel results?

Many patients notice reduced pain and improved mobility within 24–48 hours of their first session. Some feel an immediate reduction in muscle tension on the table. A mild post-treatment soreness (similar to a tough workout) is normal and typically resolves within 1–2 days.

How many sessions will I need?

Acute trigger points often respond in 1–3 sessions. Chronic conditions may require more. Dry needling is most effective as part of a comprehensive PT plan that addresses the underlying movement dysfunction — not as a standalone treatment repeated indefinitely.

Patient Reviews

What our patients
are saying

★★★★★

"My shoulder had been frozen-feeling for almost a year. Within 24 hours of my first dry needling session I had mobility I hadn't seen in months. It's not magic — they combined it with exercises — but the needle work was the thing that unlocked it."

Kevin R. Shoulder Pain & Stiffness · February 2026
★★★★★

"I get migraines and my PT traced a lot of the tension to my suboccipitals. Dry needling right at the base of my skull sounds terrifying but was barely noticeable — and I went two months without a headache after the first round."

Ashley C. Cervicogenic Headaches · March 2026
★★★★★

"Chronic low back pain for six years. Tried chiropractors, massage, injections. Dry needling at Cowboy combined with actual core work is the first thing that's produced lasting change. I'm not pain-free but I'm 80% better and I know how to manage it."

Robert H. Chronic Low Back Pain · April 2026
