Simultaneous cold and compression using the Mueller Therm-X system — clinically superior to ice bags or compression wraps alone. We use it to control post-surgical and post-injury swelling, reduce pain, and create the optimal environment for healing.
Traditional icing reduces tissue temperature, which slows metabolism and nerve conduction — reducing pain and limiting secondary tissue damage. But without simultaneous compression, the cold drives fluid out of the superficial tissue but doesn't prevent it from pooling in the deeper joint space.
Combined cold compression addresses both mechanisms simultaneously: the cold reduces pain and controls inflammation at the tissue level, while the uniform compression prevents fluid accumulation in the joint and promotes lymphatic drainage. The result is faster swelling resolution and more effective pain control than either modality alone.
Research in the post-surgical orthopedic literature consistently shows that patients using cold compression units have less pain, require less narcotic medication, and regain range of motion faster in the days following surgery compared to ice alone.
We use the Mueller Therm-X cold compression therapy unit — a clinical-grade device that circulates chilled water through a form-fitting anatomical wrap while simultaneously applying controlled compression. Unlike gel packs that warm rapidly, the Therm-X maintains consistent therapeutic temperature throughout the treatment.
Applied immediately after PT sessions to control swelling that limits flexion range of motion. Consistently used in the first 4–6 weeks post-op when swelling management is critical.
Post-surgical swelling slows quad activation and delays return to full weight-bearing. Cold compression directly after exercise reduces the inflammatory response that slows progress.
Shoulder wrap applied post-PT to manage pain and swelling after exercise sessions — reducing the soreness that would otherwise limit the next day's range-of-motion work.
Rapid swelling reduction in the first 72 hours following ankle injury or fracture significantly improves outcomes and reduces time to full weight-bearing.
Hip wrap applied after PT sessions to control trochanteric bursa swelling and post-exercise inflammation during the strengthening and gait-training phases of recovery.
Used after high-intensity athletic rehabilitation sessions to reduce delayed-onset inflammation and allow patients to train at full intensity more frequently.
Cold compression is applied as a modality within your PT session and covered under your physical therapy benefit. We accept Medicare, BCBS, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Cigna, Humana, GEHA, and more. Cash-pay options available.
Mueller Therm-X cold compression can be added to any PT session or booked standalone. Pricing is clear and straightforward — no billing surprises.
HSA and FSA accepted. Sessions can be combined with any service. Call (330) 235-9142 to schedule.
"I had a total knee replacement and the swelling after PT was brutal. The Therm-X unit at the end of each session made an enormous difference in how fast I could do the next session. My surgeon was impressed with how quickly my range came back."
"ACL reconstruction recovery. They used the Therm-X after every single session and I credit it for how quickly I got back to training. Less soreness the next day, less stiffness, and way less reliance on anti-inflammatories."
"I sprained my ankle badly in January — significant swelling, couldn't bear weight. The cold compression unit during the first two weeks of PT was a huge part of why I was walking normally within six weeks. Nothing like ice bags."
Cold compression is included in your PT sessions when clinically indicated. Same-day appointments available.
