Hands-on spinal adjustments performed by our licensed Doctors of Physical Therapy — reducing pain, restoring joint mobility, and addressing the mechanical root causes of back and neck dysfunction.
Spinal manipulation — also called high-velocity low-amplitude (HVLA) thrust — is a manual therapy technique where your DPT applies a controlled, targeted force to a specific spinal joint. The goal is to restore normal joint mechanics, reduce pain, and improve range of motion.
It's often accompanied by an audible "pop" — cavitation, caused by gas bubbles releasing within the joint fluid. That sound is a normal byproduct, not an indicator of the treatment's effectiveness.
Spinal mobilisation (a gentler, oscillatory technique without the thrust) is also available for patients who prefer it or for whom manipulation is contraindicated. Your DPT determines which approach is most appropriate based on your clinical presentation.
Spinal manipulation is most effective when combined with therapeutic exercise to address the underlying movement dysfunction. We don't just crack backs and send patients home — we integrate manual therapy into a comprehensive program that produces lasting results.
Evidence consistently supports spinal manipulation as one of the most effective early interventions for acute mechanical low back pain — often producing faster improvement than medication alone.
Cervical and upper thoracic manipulation reduces neck pain and headache intensity and restores rotation and side-bending range of motion in a way that stretching alone cannot match.
A stiff thoracic spine forces compensatory movement to the lumbar spine and shoulders. Thoracic manipulation is one of the best interventions for both mid-back pain and shoulder impingement.
Certain presentations of disc herniation and nerve root compression respond to specific spinal mobilisation and traction techniques that reduce intradiscal pressure and nerve irritation.
SI joint pain — a common cause of one-sided low back and buttock pain — responds well to targeted sacroiliac manipulation combined with hip and core stabilisation exercises.
Stiff, painful spinal facet joints from arthritic changes or postural loading respond to mobilisation that restores normal gliding mechanics and reduces protective muscle spasm.
Spinal manipulation by a licensed DPT is covered by Medicare and most commercial plans as part of a physical therapy benefit. We accept BCBS, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Cigna, Humana, GEHA, VA/Tricare, and more. Cash-pay options also available.
Spinal manipulation and mobilisation are cash-pay services at Cowboy Healthcare. No surprise bills, no waiting on authorisations. Pay at time of service — HSA and FSA cards accepted.
HSA and FSA cards accepted. No referral required. Cash, card, and digital payments welcome. Call (330) 235-9142 to book.
"I came in barely able to turn my head — classic text neck from working from home. My DPT did cervical and thoracic work in the same session and I walked out with full rotation. The exercises they gave me have kept it from coming back."
"My lumbar had completely locked up after a move. Muscle relaxers weren't touching it. One manipulation session and it was 80% better — I came back twice more to finish the job. Haven't had a flare in four months."
"SI joint dysfunction for two years. Multiple doctors told me to 'just stretch.' Here they assessed exactly where the dysfunction was, manipulated it, and added targeted stabilisation work. I'm not just better — I understand what was causing it."
Same-day appointments available. Spinal manipulation is included in your standard PT session — no separate booking required.
